RAVES = Regular, Adequate, Variety, Eating Socially, Spontaneous Eating.
RAVES is an evidence informed eating disorder treatment framework it provides a step-by-step process to help with developing a healthy relationship with food. It was developed by fellow Dietitian Shane Jeffrey from Queensland.
This model has a three phase structure:
First phase is about establishing regular and adequate food consumption, it prioritises nutritional rehabilitation and physiological adaption to improved eating patterns. Regular eating consists of three main meals and two to three snacks (Breakfast, Morning Tea, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner, Supper).
It can improve digestive functioning , stimulate metabolic efficiency, helps to maintain blood sugar levels, improves quality and quantity of food choices, portions and energy intake whilst addressing macronutrient intake distribution.
Second phase is focused on variety, eating socially and spontaneity – begin to enjoy food, experience improvements in quality of life and reconnect socially with friends and family. Build a flexible platform for trusting food decisions.
Third phase is intuitive eating practices – bringing it back to basics, not stressing or thinking about food just using our inherent intuition. Develop a natural food relationship whilst increasing your confidence and trust in your natural body signals.
